Heikki Kovalainen could make a return to Formula 1 with Caterham in 2014, team owner Tony Fernandes admitted to Autosport.
The Finnish driver drove for the upstart in 2010 when it first joined the sport and continued until last season when he was dropped in favour of a completely new line-up consisting of Charles Pic and Giedo van der Garde.
However both of Caterham's current drivers are out of contract at the end of the year and Kovalainen, according to Fernandes, is in the frame to replace one.
"Absolutely [he could return]. It is no secret that I am close to Heikki and I have a lot of time for him, so let's see.
"I will leave it to the team to decide who they want, and it has to be their choice finally at the end of the day.
"It would be foolish to commit now, because plenty can happen between now and the end of the season, so let's see what is available," he added.
The signs that Kovalainen could be about to race in F1 again have been getting ever stronger. He was called upon to analyse new upgrades during FP1 in both Bahrain and Spain. Later in the season, he was once again given the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the CT03 in Belgium and Italy.
