Sauber's chief designer Matt Morris will join McLaren to take up the role of engineering director where he will report to technical director Tim Goss.

The British designer has worked at Sauber since 2011, having previously been at Williams since 2003, but will leave the team to join McLaren when his Sauber contract permits.

Martin Whitmarsh confirmed the news on Friday in the British Grand Prix paddock.

"During a period of intense technical challenge within Formula 1, Matt's appointment is the first step in an ongoing programme to strengthen the engineering department as our organisation prepares for the arrival of Honda in 2015," he said.

McLaren have lost some key staff in recent seasons, including Lewis Hamilton and Paddy Lowe, both of which have joined Mercedes.

Morris will be replaced by Sauber's head of concept design, Eric Gandelin.
